Candy and Confusion

A gift basket from one of my friends.

I received a mystery gift this weekend. With the pandemic, packages come straight to the door instead of being left at the office, so it was odd that I got a notification saying that something was there to be picked up.

My other half went to retrieve it and it was a Halloween gift basket. The card was signed “AJ” but there was no other indication who it was from. My first thought was, “I don’t know an AJ.” In response, my boyfriend looked at a bookcase full of Backstreet Boys CDs and random things I’ve had for years. I rolled my eyes and dismissed it (despite my inner fangirl trying to work out ways to make it true).

About an hour later, I messaged my friend, April. I always think of her maiden name despite 11 years of marriage with her last name being Jones. It also occurred to me that she recently asked for my address again. I assumed it was preparation for her annual Christmas cards.

We had a good laugh about it and lamented the fact that we are getting to the age where we’re going to forget things far too frequently. It was a short conversation, but it made me smile and the fact that she thought to send me that meant a lot to me.

It’s just one more reminder to focus on the small things and kind gestures. Those are the most important things in life.
