Be Brave

Courage is underrated. Everyone talks about it and throws the word around rather easily in some cases, rather sparingly in others.

We think about courage in terms of superheroes and military and law enforcement officers and firemen. Doctors and nurses who are in the thick of the pandemic caring for some who still believe it’s a hoax. The brave souls who fight for “us” every day.

What about those being courageous in their everyday lives?

What about the overnight stocker who gets screamed at by an entitled shopper at the end of their shift after making sure there were products on the shelves for the masses who need them?

What about the person battling depression and isolation, working from home alone but for their plants and their internet connection?

What about the one who finally has the ability to let go of toxic friends or relatives and insists on putting their own mental health first?

These people are the ones we know even more, yet they don’t get congratulated or even recognized. We don’t call them courageous for doing what needs to be done. In fact, they’re often called selfish for standing up for themselves. It’s okay to put yourself first. It’s okay to need to take care of you. It’s okay to walk away from a toxic relationship, yes, even if it’s “family.”

It’s not easy. It’s often extremely painful to do. But, it’s worth it. So, for whoever needs to hear it today, it’s okay to concentrate on you right now. It’s okay to be selfish (it’s not inherently a bad thing).

You do you. Be the best you can be in your set of circumstances and decide what you want. Then eliminate everything in your way.
